This Saori handwoven stole in mint green and red stripes, woven on a Saori loom at ALC, Chennai. Cotton, 175 × 25 cm. One-of-a-kind design — no two pieces come out the same. In Saori weaving the weaver chooses the colours at the loom rather than following a pattern. Worn over a kurta, a sari or a plain shirt.

Buying several?
MATCHED BY COLOURThis one was made once, so an order for twenty is matched by colour family and size rather than by exact piece — and we send photographs of the actual batch before it goes out. Tell us the occasion, the number and the date, and we will say honestly whether we can make it.
Lead time is two to three weeks for ten to twenty-four pieces, and three to five beyond that.

The warp is dressed
Around four hundred cotton threads are wound onto the loom by hand, at the centre. It is a day's work before any weaving starts, and it is where most of the learning happens.
Woven free-form
Saori weaving has no pattern to follow. The weaver chooses each colour as they reach for it, which is why no two pieces come out the same and why nobody here can promise you a repeat.
Cut, knotted, washed
The fringe at each end is knotted by hand. Every piece is washed before it is measured, so the length on this page is the length after it has shrunk.
