Aadhi Learning Centre teaches weaving, craft and cooking to people with special needs, in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai.
The centre exists because there is a gap between school and work that very few people with special needs get across. Training that ends in a certificate nobody asks for is not training. Work that is real, sold, and paid for is.
So the centre teaches trades with a market: Saori weaving, block printing, festive craft, and cooking. What comes out is sold, and the maker is paid for what sells.
Saori is a Japanese method of handweaving with no fixed pattern and no such thing as a mistake. It is used in special education all over the world for one reason — it rewards expression instead of precision, so there is no way to get it wrong. It is also why no two pieces here are alike: four hundred threads are dressed onto the loom by hand, and what happens after that is the weaver's own.
Visitors are welcome any weekday. A shop that invites you to walk in is a shop you can trust with a transfer.
